Call for donations: holiday selfies for the Swiss National Museum

The Swiss National Museum’s photography collection includes numerous images documenting the history of tourism in Switzerland. Many come from private sources, including family albums of the 1920s that portray local ski holidays, or colour slides from the 1960s that evoke adventurous trips to distant lands. To expand our collection with more contemporary images, we are calling for donations of digital holiday selfies, which many of us have been taking using smartphones or digital cameras for around 20 years. The impetus for this appeal is the exhibition ‘Tourism. Switzerland as a Travel Destination’, which will run from June 2026 at the Forum of Swiss History Schwyz. A selection of the photographs submitted will be presented for the first time at this exhibition as part of a digital slideshow.

What are selfies?

Selfies are photographic self-portraits taken by the subject themselves, usually taken with a device held at arm’s length or with a selfie stick. Selfies can show one person or several (‘group selfies’).

We would be delighted if you decided to donate a holiday selfie to the Swiss National Museum’s photography collection. Please note the following:

  • You may submit one photograph provided that you are the copyright holder or have obtained the consent of the copyright holder.
  • All persons depicted in the photograph must consent to its use by the SNM (see also ‘Legal considerations’).
  • Please submit a single holiday selfie that has been taken using a digital camera or a smartphone (not a scan of an analogue photo).
  • The holiday selfie can be one that was taken in Switzerland or abroad.
  • The submission should be done online using the form below. You can only upload one holiday selfie at a time. If you wish to donate several photos, you need to complete the upload process several times.

Many thanks!
